Frederick Richard’s parents can’t help but flip out in France.
After all, the Team USA gymnast performed a dazzling routine July 29 at the 2024 Olympics, contributing to the men’s gymnastics team’s first medal since 2008.
As the 20-year-old stuck his final landing, his mom and dad Ann-Marie and Carl Richard were seen shouting and buzzing with tons of joy. And while pumping his fists in the air following his routine, Carl gushed, "That’s my baby!"
Frederick was a star on the mat throughout the final, performing a challenging high bar routine and sticking his dismount, which left Team USA in a promising position. He also sprung into work for his still rings and floor routines. Following the team’s monumental win, Frederick took a moment to celebrate the hard work he and teammates Brody Malone, Asher Hong, Paul Juda, and Stephen Nedoroscik put in, which earned them the bronze medal.
"I had no doubt in this team and it showed today," the two-time world bronze medalist, donning his new hardware, told NBC Sports after the medal ceremony. "We all came together when it mattered, and we did something great for our country."
Meanwhile, Brody—who put in the work on still rings, vault and high bar in the men's final—noted that their team's huddles after each apparatus kept their eyes on the prize.
"We just had to stay in our bubble, go one event at a time and not look at what anyone else was doing," he explained. "That was our plan going into it and we executed it flawlessly."
Among the U.S. gymnasts who captivated the viewers during the competition was Stephen, who performed on the pommel horse, which solidified Team USA’s third place finish behind Japan, who took home gold, and China, which followed behind with silver.
And Stephen, 25, credited his team’s work in preparing him ahead of his routine.
"There's one thing you talk about in gymnastics and it's positive momentum," he told NBC Sports' Mike Tirico after the medal ceremony. "And these guys did that to the T, especially on vault. You could get goosebumps from watching that back. And going out on pommel horse—last guy up in the whole competition—I had a good feeling that our team was in a great spot."
